sneak peak: VIOLETTE “RUDE BOY YUTE” FW11 COLLECTION x SHOT IN TRINIDAD BY JONATHAN MANNION (MAY 2011)

Way back in May, Jonathan Mannion and I flew out to Trinidad for a few shoots. One of which, was to shoot the latest VIOLETTE NEW YORK COLLECTION (The site is being refurbished by the genius STEVE KING at FISHBUCKET as we speak and we’ll be up and ready for sales FRIDAY OCTOBER 14TH)

The latest collection is West Indian themed. Inspired by a lifetime of being West Indian and recent trips to Trinidad now as an adult. The collection pulls from everyday Caribbean products, catch phrases found in music, and flags. Most of the pieces are subdued in color and opposite of most Caribbean themes, something that can fit any lifestyle…

While scouting for locations to shoot my lookbook in Trinidad, my heart was set on a section of town called Chaguanas. Since we were on a time crunch we had to find another area that suited my vision and our schedule. When we passed GEORGE STREET, I was set. The Trini friends who were born and raised in Trinidad couldn’t understand why I chose this area since it was known for being crime filled and forgotten. That made it all the more intriguing to me. It was grimey, but beautful. Seeing all the everyday people working and living their lives was interesting. I also like the juxtaposition of our gorgeous and towering beauties posing against such a backdrop. It all worked out very well…
