Recap: Vashtie Brings Back her Classic 1992 Party

On Thursday, our favorite “downtown sweetheart” reminded us all why there is nothing better than gyrating and “throwing it back” to some good ole’ classics! Hosted by Gitoo and joined by a roster of eclectic djs like Very Advanced and Odalys – Vashtie officially brought back her iconic party 1992.

Established in 2006 by Vashtie herself, the 1992 party is a monthly event celebrating the classic songs of the 90s and early 2000s. After going on a little hiatus, it was brought back this past Thursday at The VNYL and turned out to be a complete hit. In the background played a loop of iconic 90s videos (think Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Living Single, Fiona Apple videos, and rampant raves videos), guests jammed to the songs that defined a decade – everything from Missy Elliot to “Back That Azz Up.”

Guests arrived right on time, piling into the space ready to have a good time. Amongst the crowd piled in the street wear those in there most “downtown street meets grunge” attire – including our host who sported black combat boots, a black jumper dress, and off the shoulder white fitted tee. To warm the crowd up, we started the night off with Dj Very Advanced. With an impressive mix of afro beats (“Soke”) with 90s gems like Digable Planets, “Cool Like That”, the crowd danced and sang along wanting more.

Then our girl took over the set and put the crowd at a euphoric climax. When was the last time you heard Bow Wow being played in the club? Or when was the last time you got on the dance floor and battled an opponent with your best “Chicken Noodle Soup” or “Aunt Jackie”? Guests had no choice but to join a non-stop motion of head bops, sing-alongs (I myself became the legend Jay-Z when “Give it to Me” came on), and finding a loyal dance partner that could keep up with your moves. If you are a part of the crowd who goes to a party to sit and look miserable, this was not the party for you.

The night ended with Odalys who mixed as if the party would not reach an end! The crowd, still off of their high, were enticed with trap bangers by the likes of Shawty Lo, Mike Jones, and Wacka Flocka. Blending Afro-Latin beats with XOXO Tour Life and fusing One in a Million by Aaliyah with A Milli by Lil Wayne.

By the time it was over, guests were not only reminded of the songs they grew up listening to, but had the opportunity to have it clashed with the new age jams – something that often critics make it seem impossible to do and enjoy.  Check out the photos of the party below!
