On August 7th, I had the pleasure of DJing for the premiere of Skate Kitchen at The Standard Biergarten. Skate Kitchen is a narrative and feature film about an introverted teenage skateboarder from Long Island who meets and befriends an all-girl, New York City-based skateboarding crew called Skate Kitchen. The film captures the experience of women in male-dominated spaces and tells a story of a girl who learns the importance of camaraderie and self-discovery.
Skate Kitchen stars Rachelle Vinberg and Jaden Smith and to my surprise, the film was directed by Crystal Moselle, a former classmate of mine! Crystal and I went to film school together and it was so surreal to be DJing this event and to see everything come full circle for the both of us. Her team had no idea that we went to school together, it was totally random. It was great to see us both out here doing our thing, especially coming from our poor college days. I’m so proud of her!
The event was a fun and cool it experience, it was dope to see this new generation of skateboarders evolving the scene. Check out the trailer below for Skate Kitchen and some photos from the event!
