NEWS: #WEEKOFOUTRAGE- “WE NOT GOIN’ BACK”

“We Not Goin’ Back” is a visceral commentary on the climate surrounding the murders of Eric Garner and Michael Brown, and the crossroads we face in bringing the slow genocide of blacks and latinos in this country to a halt.  The sound exemplifies Jam No Peanut’s ‘ratchet-revolutionary’ aesthetic: combining hard-hitting politically charged verses with bass-heavy trap sounds produced by Ado the God (Mac Miller, Wiz Khalifa, Wale).

The multimedia project, which was also written, shot and edited by Mims, was conceived during a plane ride from a visit to Ferguson after the initial days of the upsurge late last August.  The video remixes Al Sharpton’s inflammatory comments during Michael Brown’s funeral, footage of the strangling of Eric Garner, and recordings of Mims and others defiantly taking the streets around the country- depicting a national movement of revolutionaries determined to put an end to the epidemic of police murder, and the victim-blaming Sharpton espouses.

Jamel ‘Jam No Peanut’ Mims is a multimedia artist, rapper, and revolutionary living in New York City.  In 2008 he received a Fulbright Scholarship to produce multimedia ethnography about hip hop culture in Beijing.  Since 2011, he has been on the frontlines of resistance against mass incarceration – where he joined Cornel West and Carl Dix in a campaign of nonviolent civil disobedience to put an end to the stop and frisk policy, and forming the Stop Mass Incarceration Network.

“We Not Goin Back” is the second music video from Jam No Peanut, and part of his debut EP to be released in 2015, “Microphone Misdemeanor.” Watch the video and view more work from the artist at his website, www.jamnopea.net.  For more information, follow the movement to end mass incarceration and the criminalization of black and latino youth at www.stopmassincarceration.net.
